Weekend links

I had a bunch of links for this weekend, but just not much time to post them. Anyway, here are a few …
Tangotiger linked to an old article on fielding analysis. I’ve only skimmed it so far, but if you’re interested in how fielding is (or could/should be) measured today, I’d recommend checking it out. The Book Blog thread (linked above; the first one) also has quite a few links to other old sabermetric writing. I liked Peter Jensen’s comment:
An extremely interesting article. As an historian I frequently find that we underestimate the sophisticated thinking of those in the past. While technology and information storage and retrieval systems evolve at a rapid pace the human mind evolves very slowly.
Speaking of fielding articles, here’s a newer one (and a good one) from Slate.
Jon Shepherd takes a look at infield defensive age curves at Camden Depot. Okay, that’s the last fielding article!
Here’s a good interview about PITCHf/x with Josh Kalk.
If you like the Padres and baseball cards, you’ll probably like The Electric Friar. fwiw, up until a couple of years ago, I used to be a big baseball card collector. I don’t buy many cards anymore, but that could easily change sometime down the line …
Daniel takes a pretty interesting look at how star players age, using WARP.
Here’s Geoff Young with a look at the Padres’ ability to control the strike zone.
Alex Eisenberg breaks down draft picks 36-44, which includes an analysis of Jaff Decker.
Alright, I’m all over the place here … have a good weekend!
