BBA Awards: MVP

This season, there was no clear choice for MVP.  There were a lot of excellent performances in the National League, but none that truly stood out.  A legitimate argument could be made for any of my top 3 picks being awarded MVP.

My ballot:

1. Albert Pujols–Essentially tied with Votto and Zimmerman for the league lead in WAR.  When current season performance is so close, I generally go with the player who was best in the past.

2. Joey Votto–Outstanding offensive season.

3. Ryan Zimmerman–Combines high quality offense with one of the best gloves in the league.  No worse than Votto or Pujols this season.

4. Troy Tulowitzki–Outstanding glove, outstanding bat, premium position.  Only issue seems to be staying healthy.

5. Matt Holliday–Another solid offensive season, paired with his best fielding season (8.2 UZR) of his career.

6. Roy Halladay–Best pitcher in the National League

7. Josh Johnson–Filthy stuff.  A legitimate ace.

8. Adam Wainwright–3 of the top 8 players in the National League were Cardinals.  Too bad the rest of the team was nowhere near as good.

9. Adrian Gonzalez–A hometown selection who would have ranked right near the top of the list midway through the season.

10. Ubaldo Jimenez–Always makes the Padres look silly.

1. Joey Votto

2. Albert Pujols

3. Carlos Gonzalez

BBA Awards: Cy Young

My Ballot:

1. Roy Halladay-Led the N.L. in WAR (6.6), and pitched a playoff no-hitter.

2. Josh Johnson-More WAR/IP than Halladay, but he also pitched approximately 70 fewer innings.

3. Adam Wainwright-Might be the most underrated player in the major leagues the over the past 3 season.

Padres Chapter Ballot:

1. Roy Halladay

2. Adam Wainwright

3. Josh Johnson

4. Ubaldo Jimenez

5. Mat Latos

BBA Awards: Reliever of the Year

My Personal Ballot:

1) Heath Bell–Heath rated third in the National League in Fangraphs WAR, racking up 2.4 wins above replacement.  Because he is the San Diego Padres closer, and small differences in WAR are not all that significant, I rate him number one.

2) Carlos Marmol–Marmol had a quietly exceptional year.  He compiled a league leading 3.1 WAR, and struck out a staggering 16 batters per nine innings.  His slider (2.3 runs/100 pitches above average) is filthy.

3) Brian Wilson–It pains me to say it, but the Giants closer was really good this year.  He ranked second in the National League with 2.7 WAR, and played a crucial role in the Giant’s N.L. West winning campaign.

BBA Awards: Rookie of the Year

Sorry, no time for a thorough write-up, but these are supposed to be publicly posted…

The San Diego Padres chapter voted as follows:

1) Jason Heyward (ATL)

2) Buster Posey (SFG)

3) Jaime Garcia (STL)

Note: The only other chapter member to vote was RJs Fro, whose ballot was the same as mine.

BBA Post-Season Awards: Manager of the Year

Note: I apologize for the lack of posting in recent months.  I have been swamped with work.  That said, starting in about a 2 weeks, I will once again be able to post somewhat regularly.  Its too bad the Padres won’t still be playing.

Like last year, the Baseball Blogger’s Alliance is voting on its post-season awards.  Each chapter gets two votes per award, and only votes for awards in its own league (NL/AL).  The San Diego Padres chapter has decided to pool its votes so that each member gets to vote. Before I get to our chapter’s vote, I want to release my personal choices for National League Manager of the Year:

1.  Bud Black.  Hey, why not?  The Padres had a surprisingly good season, so I’ll give Black the hometown vote.

2. Charlie Manuel-The Phillies had the best record in the N.L., so at least Manuel didn’t hold them back too much.

3. Bobby Cox-Lets give the guy credit for going out strong.

Intentionally left off the ballot-Dusty Baker.  A guy who says things like:

“On-base percentage is great if you can score runs and do something with that on-base percentage…Clogging up the bases isn’t that great to me

and

I think walks are overrated unless you can run. If you get a walk and put the pitcher in a stretch, that helps, but the guy who walks and can’t run, most of the time he’s clogging up the bases for somebody who can run.

will never get my vote for manager of the year.

As for the Padres chapter of the BBA, we voted as follows:

1. Bud Black

2/3 Bobby Cox*

2/3 Dusty Baker*

*Cox and Baker tied with 6 point each.  On one of our ballots, Cox will be listed second, and Baker third. On our second ballot, the order will be reversed.

Individual blogger votes:

RJ’s Fro:

1. Bud Black
2. Dusty Baker
3. Bruce Bochy
