I sometimes wonder why our starting first baseman is listed as a prospect, but then I remember Alonso "hasn't done it yet". With Quentin out possibly the entire month of April, and Alonso's backup likely playing a lot of left field (shudder), Yonder might get to see lefty Kershaw twice, one or both of the Phillies' lefties of note, and the Giants' Bumgarner. That's a real test of his ability to hit lefties.

@Tom- The Padres are in another good position this year with 6 picks through the first 2 rounds. I agree, the drafting has improved and has been solid of late.

Now that we have a competitive number of scouts (no matter what Grady Fuson might say), the Padres are well-represented at a lot of games.
I wish McLeod was still here. The last two drafts were terrific, even with the failure to sign Whitson.

@Web- Not at all surprised, after the first few picks, the talent drop off is big but the next couple dozen picks are all close in talent. Unfortunately, the Padres will be picking amongst the best of the 2nd tier. Wacha would be a good pick at 6, but could also fall to 15.

The Padres have been keeping a close eye on Michael Wacha and team scouts have been at both of his starts so far.

Is the Padres' farm so stacked with power pitchers that they'd actually release a big power pitcher like Chris Fetter, a 2009 college draft pick? It seems like the Padres could use the injury year to stash him back in Fort Wayne or even Eugene, since it's likely one or both of Kelly/Wieland could be at Petco before September, and a slew of pitchers will be moving up. It's almost like college picks aren't allowed to have a setback or injury.

Lance McCullers??? The Padres already had him for a few years. He was a pretty decent reliever, but he must be in his late 40s by now. Are you pulling our leg, Scott?
